GENERAL GATE MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION WALLA WALLA DISTRICT

Version 2

Contents

Overview

Due to the ongoing increase of Pittag detections and diversions PSMFC suggests that the following maintenance and inspections be performed on a scheduled basis to ensure mechanical operability. The following list will designate, by site and gate, what should be performed and on what time interval it should be performed. The Maintenance section provides details on how gates are to be tested, inspected and maintained.

Slide Gate Maintenance

Please contact the PSMFC office in Kennewick (509) 735-2773 if there has been gate repair that required the gate to shut down for any period of time during the out migration season.

Winter Shutdown Checklist

  1. Turn off air – Make sure that there is 0 psi on indicator. No work should ever be performed on a gate that is under pressure.
  2. Drain filter regulator.
  3. Turn off power to solenoid valves; make sure indicator lights on solenoids are off.
  4. Remove Clevis pin. Gate should slide freely by hand. If gate does not move freely it may be necessary to remove gate to inspect for warpage caused by excessive “slamming”.
  5. Inspect Clevis (yolk) pin for signs of wear that may have caused additional slop on mount or are causing misalignment of gate.
  6. Check rails for debris or sludge build-up.
  7. Slide gate by hand. Check for smooth operation.
  8. Check gate rails for wear. If wear is found to be extensive replace rails.
  9. Check shock absorber for weakness. (Check to see if shock bottoms out)
  10. Check air lines for discoloration or bulges. If need be replace air line.

Spring Startup Checklist

  1. If gate has been opened by hand or moved from a complete closed position it must be returned to complete closed before air can be turned “on”. A quick check of gate operation can be checked at this point if needed.
  2. Turn on air supply (operating pressure 95-105 psi).
  3. Check for air leaks.
  4. Trigger gate from test button
    • Check gate for smooth operation
  5. PSMFC will make all timing adjustments. .

Troubleshooting

CAUTION

NEVER WORK ON THE SOLENOID VALVES OR THE GATES THEY CONTROL WHILE THE SUPPLY AIR IS ON.

SERIOUS INJURY COULD OCCUR.

BEFORE DOING ANY MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENTS:

Turn off air; NEVER work on gates with air supply on.Check regulator for O psi.

Problem: Gate Slams after “soft close”:

  • Inadequate Pressure
    • Check pressure, 95-105 psi recommended for slide gate operation
  • Bleeder valve
    • Adjust bleeder valve counterclockwise in ¼ turn increments, testing slide gate between each adjustment
  • Misalignment or debris in Rail causing drag on close.
    • Check rails for debris
    • Check for misalignment

Problem: Gate Slams before “soft close”:

  • Abundance of Pressure.
    • Check to make sure that the air pressure has not exceeded 105 psi.
  • Bleeder Valve
    • Adjust bleeder valve clockwise by ¼ turn increments, testing slide gate after each adjustment.

2 and 3-Way Rotational Gate Maintenance

Please: Always coordinate with PSMFC site biologist before doing any work on rotational gates. Also, please log any work in the maintenance log located in each rotating gate cabinet. Thanks!

Winter Shutdown Checklist

  1. Turn off air supply
  2. Drain filter regulator
  3. Turn off power to solenoid valves; make sure indicator lights on solenoids are off.
  4. 2-way rotational gate spools should be backed off by hand to relieve constant pressure on actuator shock.
    • NOTE: Not necessary to perform this function on 3-way rotational gate.
  5. Clean the drive belt and sprocket teeth to remove dirt, grime and sticky build up.
  6. Check for stress cracks on center spool; if noticed, weld or replace spool (stress cracks are caused by worn-out shocks which were not replaced).

Spring Startup Checklist:

  1. Turn on air supply (operating pressure 100 psi for 3-way and 90 psi for 2 way).
  2. Check for air leaks.
  3. Trigger gate rotation in all directions.
    • Check belt tension, adjust if needed.
    • If shocks on actuator bottom out, replace shocks.

Problem: Slow center spool movement:

  • Inadequate air pressure.
  • Check pressure, 100 psi recommended for 3 way, 90 psi for 2 way.
  • Tight drive belt.
    • Loosen belt, unit should turn freely by hand with no air pressure.
  • Silt in spool bushing or drive belt-sprocket interface
    • Flush out with water.
    • Blowout with air.

Problem: Center spool does not shift or return:

  • Defective solenoid valve.
    • If not lit when gate is triggered, replace solenoid.
  • Broken electrical connections to solenoid valve.
    • Check and repair any broken wires or connections.
  • Possible sticky spool in solenoid valve
    • Remove, clean and reinstall.
    • If problem persists, replace valve.

Problem: Excessive hammering when gate shifts (loud banging noise).

  • Bad or collapsed shock.
    • Replace shock on rotational actuator following the instructions in cabinet.
