Location data on PTAGIS

Background
The location of the various sites where PTAGIS activities occur are displayed through the PTAGIS web app. The current best source of that information is the collection of tables known as ALRS.
Adding sites one at a time
The process of describing a site to ALRS can be done through the ALRS web app (http://www.ptagis.org/alrs). This application is best used for additions and deletions of sites, but is not as effective for modifications or bulk loading of many sites.
The procedure followed for adding each recent site to ALRS can be found in the wiki by looking for "add site xxx" where xxx is the name of the site of interest. The procedure is difficult to describe due to the complexity of the decision tree the follows the type of site being added and the nature of the activity that takes place at that site, as well as other considerations. Often, the best course of action is to search for a similar site and follow the procedure for that site.
Adding sites in bulk
There are also directions for bulk loading into ALRS from text files or from temporary database tables.
Calculating position on the map from latitude and longitude
Part of the data necessary when describing a new location is the x,y coordinates of the site as it should be displayed on the flash map. This information is based on latitude and longitude and is calculated by gps2pixel.pl.
Deploying ALRS data to the Flash map
After the ALRS tables are made to contain a proper description of current sites, there is a procedure for deploying that information to the Flash map of sites.
