Q: How is a P3 data file Correction processed?

What happens when I submit a corrected P3 file to PTAGIS? Does the original file get overwritten on your file server, like the interrogation files? How does the PTAGIS database track the changes?

A:

PTAGIS implemented our Field Data Validation and Loading (FDVL) application in December, 1998. The FDVL module maintains distinct versions of all tag/release/recovery data files uploaded to the PTAGIS file servers, but instantiates only the most recent version in the PTAGIS database. When you submit any P3 file to PTAGIS, we first check to see if a matching file has previously been uploaded into the PTAGIS database. If not, your file is assigned an "-L_1" suffix and stored to the file server; the data loaded to the PTAGIS database reference the file with this "load version". When you upload a correction to that file, that version is assigned a unique "-L-x" suffix, incremented by one from the previous version number. Any existing tagging/release, recapture, mortality, and tagging duplicate records for the previous version of your file are deleted from the PTAGIS database, and then the new file version's contents are processed and loaded.

You can list and view all the versions of your P3 tag/release/recovery files at the PTAGIS Web Portal (http://www.ptagis.org/ptagis) by running the Tag File Content Summary report.

This report will summarize how the various data events in the selected files were identified and stored in the PTAGIS database.

You can also list and view the files as they are stored on the PTAGIS file server. From the PTAGIS Web Portal, browse to the Data Files page and click on the link to either all versions or just the current versions of P3 tag/release/recovery files.

The file folders are organized by the Data File Coordinator ID, and then by calendar year.
