This procedure describes the Firmware Upgrade Process of tested and certified transceiver firmware.

Contents

Objective

To ensure when upgrading the transcievers firmware that the process was successful and that all upgrades are done in same manner.

Scope

The focus of this procedure will be to outline where the certified firmware will be archived and the formal process that is to be followed by a requesting agency in order to acquire the firmware. It will also describe a process to ensure a successful upgrade.

Responsibilities

The PTAGIS Field Operations will be responsible for the certification and archiving of new firmware versions. In some cases, PTOC will not be the agency to performing the Firmware upgrade, but will provide direction and technical support on issues not addressed in this procedure.

Procedure

Acquiring Certified Firmware.

  1. The firmware revisions will be archived on the PTAGIS server in a secure location. Contact PTAGIS Field Operation for access to the firmware.

Upgrading the Instrument with the New Firmware

The FS-1001 and FS1001A transceivers firmware can only be upgraded via the “Maintenance Port” Com 1. Default baud rate is 9600 kbps. Below is the punch list of hardware and software requirements needed for the upgrade.

Computer requirements and cabling.

  • 1 Physical on board serial port.
  • Or a substitute to the above, a USB to Serial converter
  • (1) 9-pin male to 9-pin female serial cable. (Straight through, Pin to Pin) configuration.

Software Requirements

  • VB-Flash application version 2.2
  • The correct Firmware version (XXXX.hex) for the instrument being upgraded.

Installing the new Firmware

  1. Power up the transceiver while holding down the “Menu and the Esc” key’s on the front key pad of the transceiver. The front panel display on the transceiver will read Update Request, Waiting Download. This indicates that the boot sequence was successful.
  2. Attach the male end of the serial cable to the “Maintenance port” of the transceiver and the female end to the PC’s serial port.
  3. Start the VB-Flash application.
  4. From the Vbflash Port Setup command, select the PC communication port connected to the reader. By default, 'COM2' is selected.
  5. Press the first button on the left of the tool bar indicated by the “Folder Icon” and navigate to the local directory where the XXXX.hex file is located and select that file.
  6. Press the second button from the left of the tool bar indicated by the “Tools Icon”. Enter the coil I.D. of the transceiver to be flashed and enter the “Current Alarm Threshold Value” This value is the Minimum antenna current detected before the reader will output an alarm.Typically, this value is set for 300 mA below the tuned current value.
  7. Press the third button from the left on the tool bar indicated by the “Handshaking Icon” The PC will then poll the reader and establish the serial connection between the two. You should see the statement “Connected “if the polling was successful.
  8. Press the fourth button from the left on the tool bar indicated by the “Arrow pointing downwards” to start the firmware upgrade.
  9. When the process is complete, the reader will reboot. Watch the front display of the reader during the post test for the message “Parameters Reloaded” This is an indication that the entire upgrade was successful.
