Objective

This document describes how to adjust the system clocks on interrogation data collection computer platforms.

Note: PTAGIS systems only operate on Pacific Standard Time and do not observe Daylight Saving Time.

Scope

This procedure is to be used to set the system clocks on production PTAGIS data collection platforms. It applies to PCs using the Windows 98SE, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 OS, running either Minimon or Multimon to collect data.

Rules for clock synchronization:

Multimon

PC2 must be within 15 seconds of PC1. This can be adjusted at any time, and shall be synchronized to PC1 during every site visit.

PC1 must be within one minute of Atomic Time. This will not be adjusted unless it is out of compliance with this rule or PC1 is already out of data collection mode.

Minimon

The system clock on PC2 is automatically synchronized to the system clock on PC1 every day at midnight. Adjust both clocks to within one second of Atomic Time during every site visit.

Responsibilities

This procedure is to be performed by PTAGIS staff.

Procedure

Multimon Systems

NOTE 1: The clocks must NOT be reset while Multimon is in data collection mode, as this will disrupt the timers that control the gates, and likely lock the gates open.

NOTE 2: Do not perform this procedure within 15 minutes before or after the scheduled upload of data from PC1, as this may result in confusion regarding the generation and identify of the temporary and extraneous files created during this procedure.

NOTE 3: Do not switch the 'production' data stream from one computer to the other during a facility sample.

  1. On PC2, start PTTP Uploader from the desktop and archive all files.
  2. Exit data collection mode in Multimon on PC2 (press "F10" and then "Y").
  3. Set Multimon on PC2 from full-screen DOS mode to windowed mode. Set the system clock on PC2 to Atomic Time.
  4. Re-enter data collection mode in Multimon on PC2 (press "S" and then "<enter>" and then "<enter>" again).
  5. Wait for Multimon screen activity on PC2 to stop for a period of at least one second.
  6. Start a new data file on PC2 (hold down the "<alt>" key and simultaneously press "F10") while simultaneously stopping data collection on PC1 (press "F10" and then "Y"). Note the name of this new 'production' file on PC2.
  7. Set Multimon on PC1 from full-screen DOS mode to windowed mode. Set the system clock on PC1 to Atomic Time.
  8. Re-enter data collection mode in Multimon on PC1 (press "S" and then "<enter>" and then "<enter>" again).
  9. Wait for Multimon screen activity on PC1 to stop for a period of at least one second. Start a new data file on PC1 (hold down the "<alt>" key and simultaneously press "F10"), and immediately open a new file on PC2 (hold down the "<alt>" key and simultaneously press "F10").
  10. Open the PTTP Uploader window on PC1.
  11. On PC1, using PTTP Uploader, ARCHIVE (do not upload) the file created in Step 9.
  12. Upload and archive all outstanding PC1 data files as per SOP Site Platform Manual File Submission. Verify that that the "Upload and Archive" radio button is selected and then minimize the PTTP Uploader window.
  13. Set Multimon on PC1 to run in full-screen DOS mode.
  14. On PC2, open PTTP Uploader.
  15. Locate the file created in Step 6.
  16. Upload and archive this file to PTAGIS as per SOP Site Platform Manual File Submission.
  17. Archive all remaining files on PC2 using PTTP Uploader.
  18. Verify that that the "Archive Only" radio button is selected and close PTTP Uploader on PC2.
  19. Set Multimon on PC2 to run in full-screen DOS mode.
  20. Verify the work completed:
    • Note atomic time and simultaneously press "F4" on both PCs to insert time stamps.
    • Verify that both time stamps are within one second of each other and atomic time.
  21. Update the event log as to the operation just completed (clocks set, files submitted, etc.)
  22. Procedure complete.

Minimon Systems

  1. Set the system clocks on both PCs to Atomic Time.
  2. Update the event log as to the operation just completed (clocks set, etc.)
  3. Procedure complete.

Atomic Time – The time reference used by PTAGIS. Specifically, Pacific time zone, Coordinated Universal Time -8 hours; not Daylight Saving Time. This can be viewed on the web at http://nist.time.gov

Daylight Saving Time - During DST clocks are advanced an hour, effectively moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. Effective as of March 2007, Daylight Saving Time in the United States begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. PTAGIS systems only operate on Pacific Standard Time and do not observe Daylight Saving Time.
